Dental Checkups & Cleanings – Fort Worth, TX
Keep Your Child’s Teeth Gorgeous and Healthy

Young children aren’t known for their willingness to keep up with excellent oral hygiene habits, and dental health problems like tooth decay and gum disease often start out so small that you may not even notice them. That’s why it’s important to bring your child to our Fort Worth office at least twice a year so Dr. Thorburn can monitor their oral health and address any issues in their early stages. Here’s a brief guide to how pediatric dental checkups and cleanings work, but please contact our staff if you’d like more information.

Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

While it might be tempting to forego routine dental appointments if your child isn’t complaining about any oral discomfort, this can become quite costly in the long run. Regular dental cleanings are essential to prevent the accumulation of plaque that can lead to destructive oral infections, and most family insurance plans will cover your child’s biannual dental appointments completely. These routine visits can also prevent dental emergencies such as agonizing toothaches and avoidable oral injuries. By bringing your child into our office for routine exams and cleanings, you can prevent the need for much more expensive restorative dental care later. Since poor oral health is associated with some serious overall health issues like diabetes and heart disease, preventative dental care may help reduce your child’s risk of developing these conditions.
What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

During your child’s dental checkup, Dr. Thorburn will carefully examine your child’s teeth, gums, bite alignment, and existing dental work and screen their mouth for any abnormalities. She will also take X-rays at least once a year to check for problems beneath the surface, and she will also review your child’s medical history for any factors that can affect their oral health. If she detects any problems, she will design an effective treatment plan to address them. She will also answer any questions you have about your child’s treatment or oral hygiene during this appointment.
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning

Even if your child practices virtually perfect oral hygiene at home, there are areas of the mouth that must be cleaned by a trained professional. During your child’s dental cleaning, Dr. Thorburn will use special instruments to gently remove plaque and tartar from between their teeth and along their gumline to reduce their risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Afterward, she will carefully polish the teeth to eliminate minor surface stains. If needed, she will also treat your child’s teeth with fluoride to reinforce their enamel.
